Underground Utility Locating

Quark Scan Inc. has extensive experiences in utility locating projects of all sizes, and specializes in industrial and commercial sites where complex underground utility situations often challenge skills of  utility locators. Our utility locators have solid background in geophysics and have thorough understandings of advantages and limitations of all kinds of locating techniques. We often succeed where others fail.

Equipped with state-of-art  ground penetrating radar (GPR) and radio frequency pipe/cable locators, we locate not only evident and non-evident utilities underground, but also those underwater and embedded in concrete structures. We also utilize electromagnetic mapping and magnetic locating for special cases which prove to be difficult for usual locating techniques. In addition, we can locate other underground objects such as buried tanks, tunnels, septic systems, etc. which can potentially disrupt your ground-breaking projects.

From locating a lateral service line for a residential property to marking a whole industry property, every utility locating project is unique. Give us a call and discuss your utility locating needs!

FAQs

What makes you different from other utility locating companies?

Our utility locating is led or conducted by a geophysicist instead of a technician. Just like you want a radiologist instead of an X-Ray technician to interpret X-Ray images, you want a geophysicist instead of a GPR technician to interpret GPR images for best locating results.

How do you locate underground utilities?

The two main tools we use are radio frequency pipe/cable locators and ground penetrating radar (GPR). Pipe/cable locators including the Cable Avoidance Tool (C.A.T.) are the most common tools used for underground utility locating, but unfortunately they are also the most underused tools by most utility locators due to their superficial understandings of the technology and geology. GPR is also often underused or misused due to the difficulty of data interpretation. Our utility locators have solid background in geophysics and can take full advantage of both tools for best locating results. Also, there are other locating methods available such as electromagnetic mapping and magnetic locating, which can be utilized for some special situations.

Can you find PVC and other non-metallic utilities?

We have located many PVC, fiber optic, concrete and other non-metallic pipes/cables. However, every situation is unique and whether we can locate them or not depends on a lot of factors such as utility sizes and depths, soil conditions, access points, etc.  Please give us a call to discuss about the concerned utilities.

What types of utilities do you locate?

We locate all types of utilities: electric, communication, gas, water, sanitary sewer, storm drain, unknown utilities, etc. No matter whether they are made of metals, PVC, or fiber optic, our goal is to locate all of them when needed.

What's difference between your services and “one-call”?

"One-Call" service is referred as the public utility locating service. It could be incomplete if utilities continue onto private properties and are outside of the public utilities jurisdiction.  We provide private utility locating services besides verifying what's marked by "One-call".
